Day Trip to Izamal

Convento de San Antonio
Convento de San Antonio

Date of Trip: January 2021

When I saw pictures of this “yellow city” I knew I had to visit to see if it really is as yellow as it seems.

Spoiler alert: it is.

The center of town is filled with yellow buildings, brick roads, and horse drawn carriages. I liked how the Mayan ruins here are not a “destination”-they’re within the city and you’ll stumble upon them while walking through. I found myself walking the same streets a couple times on purpose and it made for a perfect day.

Transport: From Merida I took the Centro bus to Izamal—about an hour and a half each way

While walking around the city, be sure to visit Pirámide Kinich Kakmó. A Mayan ruin you can actually walk up and have a view overlooking the city and area.

Funny thing is the city does not look *that* yellow from up there surrounded by forestry, but makes sense as the city is not big and it’s only the center area that is all yellow.

Personally, I enjoy the occasional excursion that is just being somewhere else. It doesn’t have to be some full day adventure and that is what Izamal was—another city to explore and would recommend doing so if in the area!

Restaurant Recommendation: Kinich Izamal was great and really hit the spot after a hot day of walking
